Expectations of Behavior for Young Scientists

In order to maintain a safe and effective learning environment for all Stafford students, all young scientists are responsible for meeting the following expectations:

  1. Scientists respect their work environment and everyone in it.
  2. Scientists follow all directions the first time given.
  3. Scientists are prepared, prompt, and in the appropriate location.
  4. Scientists complete all assignments on time. Homework is given at least twice a week.
  5. Scientists comply with all guidelines found in the student handbook.

Students who choose not to follow these expectations, will be subject to disciplinary consequences and/or an alternate assignment.


Each six weeks, students will receive a minimum of 7 daily grades and 3 major grades. Types of daily grades may include: class work; quizzes; warm ups; journals; and, folder checks/participation grades. Types of major grades may include: unit tests; projects; writing assignments, and science notebook checks.

Grades are determined in this manner:      40% daily grades + 60% major grades



In the case of an excused absence, the student is allowed one make-up day for each excused absence day. Student is responsible for all missed work.  Missed lab experiments will not be made up; rather the overall grade may be prorated.


Make-Up Work Policy

The make-up work policy for a test, quiz, or daily work missed because of an absence will follow the 2017-2018 Student Handbook.


Homework Forecast

On the second day of each week, each student will be given the homework forecast, which will list the upcoming assignments and due dates for that week (and beyond, in many cases). By checking with your child on the second day of each week, you will know exactly what is required for successful homework grades. Help your child make the most of their advance notice by helping them plan homework around sports and other activities. Being proactive ensures that your child will have good homework grades, and is prepared for upcoming tests.


Late Work Policy

In regards to late work (homework or projects), students are encouraged to turn in all work on time. The penalty for turning in work late will be a 15 point deduction per day.  Again, students will have at least two homework assignments due each week.    



2 Composition notebooks (no spirals please), flash drive (will be notified when needed), black/blue pens, pencils, (red) checking pen, color pencils/markers, scissors, glue/glue sticks, ruler, box of tissue, copy paper, dry erase markers, hand sanitizer, and a small assignment pad.


Ways to Succeed in Science Class

  • Student must complete the daily warm up. 

  • Parents, please be proactive and use the homework forecast! Have your child show you all of their upcoming assignments on the second day of the week (usually Tuesday). The forecast is a great way to identify and address potential problems before they occur. If your child does not have it on the second weekday, that is a RED FLAG, and a precursor to missing/late assignments.

  • Complete ALL homework assignments.  Only by practicing will your skills improve to the level that will be required to do well on exams and tests.

  • Seek understanding and application instead of memorization in your quest to get high grades in science.

  • Attend tutorials to build skills and confidence in science, as well as to get additional help.

  • Participate, Participate, And Participate!
